Like most great horror films, it was all about the psychological effect on the audience. With Kubrick's unique style, he made the film not just spooky, but also disturbing.
The casting was great. Jack Nicholson was born to play the role of the protagonist-turned-killer. Speaking of disturbing, Shelly Duvall's eyes were disturbing.
