Thoughts
One of my favorite romantic comedies of all time.
This film that solidified Sandra Bullock's niche as the cutesy romantic comedy lead. She was masterful in creating this adorable, tender, and funny character. Bill Pullman as the love interest might not be the hunkiest, but exuded wonderful charm, and made me want to see a happy ending between them.
In addition, they were flanked by a deep cast of comedic actors, including Peter Gallagher and the late, great Peter Boyle. Not only were they funny individually, they had a perfect chemistry with each other. The family gathering scenes were precious, they truly felt like a real family. Every family member was unique and organically created, and made me want to hang out with them, just to hear them talk, argue, and ramble. There was also great moments from Bullock's boss and her landlord.
Kudos to the writing and editing. There was a lot of funny dialogue, and it never let down on the comedy. Most of the humor was based on genuine family dynamics and dialogue. It was cheesy at times, but as a mostly-straight male, I found the romantic parts to be enjoyable because of the lovable characters. I applaud the editing because timing can make or break film comedy. It had an appropriate pace and rhythm to showcase the excellently-delivered funny lines.
Even after watching this film so many times, I still never got tired of its cuteness, quirky humor, and natural family moments.
What I would change
Get rid of the corny lip-biting shot of the younger sister.
