Thoughts
There were times I wished I did not have to blink. The Wachowski brothers were the perfect directors to helm this colorful, action-packed flick.
I have never seen a full episode, but based on the casting and the style, the film felt like it was true to the spirit and style of the series and anime in general. My movie director persona wanted to be the first to make a successful live action anime movie, but it appears I've been beaten to the punch.
Naturally, I shelled out for the IMAX experience, and I had a blast, just soaking in the beautiful palette of colors and onslaught of sound effects. In fact, I never really appreciated the amazing sound system of IMAX until here.
The cast was very good as well. Emile Hirsch was perfect with his boyish looks and intensity. The always beautiful Christina Ricci made a sexy Trixie. John Goodman as Pops reminded me of Super Mario. I also did not notice until the credits that Stephen Colbert's rival, Rain, had a minor role.
My main problem with the film was that like many action flicks, it did not know how to save the best for last. The middle race was ridiculously sick. I found myself grabbing onto the chair arms just to hang on. However, because of that, the climax not as climactic as it should have been.
Based on the rumors, this will be the first of a slew of live-action movies based on animes by Big Hollywood. With 'Speed Racer', the trend is off to a good start.
What I would change
Take out the little brother scenes, and shortened the middle race to give the last race more 'oomph'. Also, some of the action was a bit too hectic to appreciate the artistry and story-telling.
