Premise
An ailing artist endeavors to create a masterpiece play about his life in New York.
Who should watch
Charlie Kaufman fans.
Thoughts
As expected, this was an insane film that probably requires multiple viewings.
Those familiar this genius know to expect anything. I laughed, I nearly cried, and I cried laughing in disbelief. Most of all, I was perplexed, confused, and any other synonyms you could find in a thesaurus. If there was a 'WTF Scale', this would be off the charts.
Kaufman is an acquired taste. I believe this was his best to date, mainly because it was as entertaining as it was complex. The amount of brainpower needed to watch was epic.
Even if you end up hating the writing, the amazing actors should win you. There were a ton of excellent female actresses, including the great Emily Watson and Catherine Keener. Though my favorite was the sensual Hope Davis as the nympho, narcissistic, and occasionally imaginary marriage counselor. Once again, Philip Seymour Hoffman could do no wrong.
I wish Spike Jonze stayed to direct this, because I thought Kaufman's rookie directing was a bit stiff. Also, the DVD's subtitles did not work, which was a big drag for me. I tried it on a PC and PS3.
If you are a Kaufman fan and if you have not seen this yet, shame on you. For those who dare to step into the labyrinth that is Charlie Kaufman's mind, I hope you will be rewarded with something 'mind-*******-blowing' (Trademark by Krausologer).
What I would change
Nothing.
Personal
I am disappointed this was not better marketed. I thought Kaufman got some good exposure and press from 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'. Instead, it was only shown in two location in LA. Due to circumstances, I decided it was not worth driving into downtown, putting up with traffic and parking, just to sit in a crappy theater. Turns out I should have done it. I regret not getting it into my 2008 movie awards. Also, I am so glad to be alive long enough to watch it before I die.
