An abused, underprivileged teen girl from inner city New York gets a new life at an outreach program.
Who should watch
Those like stories about humans surviving against relentless odds.
Thoughts
This was hard to watch, but ultimately inspiring.
Gabby Sidibe and Mo'Nique carry this film with powerful, natural performances. Both characters felt like real people in real situations. They, along with the rest of the excellent cast, help make this film painful and memorable. The supporting cast, especially the music superstars, contributed without distraction.
The story was gritty and harsh. It does not belittle or preach to the audience with its themes of poverty, domestic strife, incest, physical abuse, the trappings of welfare and inner city life. Tears of sadness were shed in the theater, but there were also tears of hope, as people reach out help Precious become a woman.
Given my personal good fortunes, I had a little trouble feeling sympathy at the beginning of the film. I was not really able to relate to their hardships. Nevertheless, as time wore on, I grew to love and care for these flawed, oppressed people.
This was an excellent, gritty tale, full of pain, sorrow, and ultimately hope. I hope people will seek this film. Also, I hope Sidibe and Mo'Nique receive acting nominations and recognition.
What I would change
Nothing. Well, other than changing to title to just 'Precious'.
