Thoughts
Ever feel like you're in only person in the room who doesn't get the joke? This film made me feel that way.

I can tell it was a well-made film. It had unique story-telling, funny dialogue, and actors who know that comedy is best delivered straight. I loved how certain phrases, such as 'I didn't do anything' were repeated throughout the film, in similar and different situations, and they became funnier and funnier after each iteration. I loved the scene-stealing performance of Fred Melamed as Sy Ableman, the man whom Larry's wife is cheating with (although, technically, they have not done anything).

Unfortunately for me, I think 75% of the comedy flew over my head, because of my unfamiliarity with Jewish-American culture. Also, some of it was probably biblical (which I am unfamiliar with either). I do not fault the Coens. This was their vision, and that's how art should always be.

Considering that I was mostly entertained, and my Jewish friend enjoyed it immensely, I believe this film was a cream of the crop for 2009. Just do not expect it to appear in my yearly list of favorites.

What I would change
No idea.

Random
No Jews were harmed during the filming of the movie.

Personal
I don't know why I don't call out a movie theater when they ruin my movie experience, but enough is enough. Shame on you, Pacific Theatres of Manhattan Beach, for your negligence.

Halfway through the film, the entire right side of the screen went out of focus. For the remainder of the film! At first, I thought it was a Coen brother trick, after all it happened just when two characters decided to get stoned. Then I realized it was not a trick, because the chapter titles and credits were still out of focus. I asked a friend of mine who watched it in a different theater, and did not see anything go out of focus.

Once again, thanks, Pacific Theatres at Pacific Manhattan Village Mall in Manhattan Beach of California. You give me another reason to watch movies at home.
