Thoughts
I'd hoped that hot chicks in skimpy outfits blowing stuff up in super-stylish ways to the beat of epic music would at least entertain my lowest denomination. Sadly, it could not do so the entire two hours.
Watching each action set piece on its own, it was great eye candy. Director Zack Snyder did a great job of filling every square inch with luscious detail, utilizing shot composition to production design to color correction. The cover songs also contributed to the music-video flair. I had always wanted to use Bjork's "Army of Me" in a bombastic action sequence, so I'm jealous someone beat me to it.
But the music-video aspect was also the movie's downfall. I didn't care about any of the characters, the twist was easy to call early on, the music choices were far from creative, and there didn't seem to be a purpose to it. So amazingly, I was seriously bored one-third of the way into the monsoon of violence, objectification, digital artistry and sonic explosions.
From a cast standpoint, I was surprised by Jon Hamm's appearance, but also glad to know Scott Glenn was still working.
Bottom line, Sucker Punch would be more enjoyable in bite-sized portions, but as a whole it was a meaningless exercise in visual-audio excess.
