Thoughts
The franchise got its mojo back.
You have no idea how glad I was when I found out Steve Kloves returned to adapt this film (and the last two films). While he took out some of everyone's favorite little scenes, as a film, this had a great flow and was able to take its time digesting the main story and keeping the spirit of the novel.
Since I waited a week before watching, I was already warned about the changes, so my first viewing was very enjoyable, since I did not have to get distracted by "well, that was different" moments. All of my friends (who religiously read the books) agree that the second time around was an immensely improved experience.
I love the fine balance of ominous mystery solving and delightfully awkward teen romance. The most surprising part was how funny those teen scenes were. I definitely laughed out loud many times. Also, I was happy for Tom Felton and the great Alan Rickman as they got their chance to shine in this film as Draco and Snape. It's astounding just how perfectly cast this whole franchise has been.
In addition to being louder and larger, the IMAX version's first few scenes were in 3D. At first I thought it was just the first action sequence, but the 3D scenes continued for quite a while into the story. But since this was only at the beginning, I would not recommend this version as strongly as the IMAX version of the previous film. If you have the money, it's a fun way to re-watch this Half Blood Prince.
After a semi-disappointing fifth film, the franchise returns to its totally awesome status. Currently, this is my second favorite Potter film.
What I would change

My favorite scene from the novel was when Harry kisses Ginny in front of all of Griffindor, and we see everyone's reactions, including Ron's "well, if you must" shrug. Part of me was a little sad that did not get in. Nevertheless, I know there was no room for two Quidditch scenes, and the kiss was still very well done.
If there was one thing to change, it would be to take out the newly-added action sequence in the middle of the story. It served a purpose as a reminder to the audience regarding the lurking evil that is Voldemort. However, perhaps those ten minutes could have been spent expanding Harry's lucky day, and thus leaving my favorite scene intact. =)
Also, I would have toned down Hermoine's "needy" affections towards Ron. It definitely was less pronounced in the novel. But just like the other alterations, this was well done and enjoyable to watch.
