Thoughts
Totally underrated comedy. If you're a Norm MacDonald fan like me.
I thought the premise was interesting, and it lent to many funny situations and scene. While the characters were doing mean things to each other, it was never in a creepy, mean-spirited way. This made the comedy enjoyable.
The goal of comedy is to make the audience laugh, and this rarely ran out of anything silly/hyperbolic/naughty/cheap for me to laugh at per minute. Director Bob Saget did a good job of letting the comedians have their space to do their thang, and kept the story and momentum from slowing down.
The cast was full of funny, recognizable people. MacDonald was extremely fun to watch, simply by playing himself (I know he is an acquired taste). A svelte and not unkempt Artie Lange did fine as the sidekick. Rest of the cast included Taylor Howard (second assistant/sidekick from Monk series), Adam Sandler, the great Don Rickles, the late Gary Coleman and the late great Chris Farley. Lastly, the late Jack Warden was quite hilarious as the cranky old dad.
The plot was simple, characters were one-dimensional, and scenes were implausible. But those flaws did not matter, because it was a lean, mean laughing machine. Its only goal was to make me laugh, and it did it very well.
What I would change
Nothing.
