Disney's masterpiece about a young lady who agrees to be the cursed Beast's prisoner in his castle to save her father.

Loved
Everything.

Thoughts
My personal favorite Disney animated film and a must-see film of the 1990's.

There was so much to choose from, but I guess my favorite aspect was the unforgettable music.  Every time the first few notes kicked in, I got chills down my spine from memories and anticipation.  The music was beautiful and the lyrics spot on.  If I had to pick a best song at gunpoint, I'd probably be dead.

In addition, the characters were magical, the voice performances brilliant, the animation elegant, and the story timeless.

I've seen it in many formats, and they were all perfectly fine.  The IMAX version had an additional song, but it paled compared to the classics.  The 3D was decent post-conversion, obviously the CGI animated scenes like in the ballroom were breathtaking.  But the original theatrical version is perfectly fine to enjoy.

If you've never seen/liked Beauty and the Beast, you are no friend of mine.

The life of a black young man in South Central Los Angeles.

Who should watch
People who would like to open their eyes to life in the ghetto.

Thoughts
What I liked best was its authentic capture of life as a young blacks in the projects. I went in expecting it to be a lot of gangsta shootouts, but it was more about the daily life and struggles of a man, his family and his friends. There were a lot of harsh truths and memorable quotes.

I wish I had seen this years earlier. Some of the famous scenes have been parodied and copied so often, they lost some emotional impact. On the other hand, it was cool to see how many black actors broke out because of this.

What I would change
Nothing.

A shock jock loses his job after a listener goes on a shooting spree. During his downfall, he meets a homeless man who was affected by that tragedy.

Who should watch
Terry Gilliam and Robin Williams fans.

Thoughts
It was good, but not great.

In terms of trippiness, it was rather tame for Terry Gilliam. There was a great scene when a bustling subway station seamlessly transformed into a giant dance hall and back. Unfortunately, like many trippy movies, these demented and wonderful visuals got in the way of the story. It always felt these scenes were there just for the sake of taking the audience on a trip.

Jeff Bridges was excellent portraying a shock jock at his full cockiness as well as vulnerability during his free fall. I thought Mercedes Rhuel did a great job as the loyal, loving girlfriend. As expected, Robin Williams stole the show. The role of an eccentric homeless man was the perfect role for his zaniness. But the big surprise was Amanda Plummer as the homeless man's love interest. She was sooo adorable (in a nerdy way). Watching these four was worth the price of admission.

It was good, but it ain't 'Brazil'.

What I would change
I could have done without the frontal nudity of Robin Williams. That was a bit disturbing.

John Cusack stars as a con artist who gets stuck in a triangle with his girlfriend (Annette Bening) and mother (Angelica Huston), both also con artists.

Liked
The cast.

Disliked
The plot.

Thoughts
As much as I love Cusack, this movie was kind of "meh".

I liked the performances by the big three. Huston and the perpetually naked Bening played modern day femme fatales very well, despite the bland dialog and lack of film noir visual flair.

The story was somewhat interesting, and all three enigmatic characters had mysterious pasts. While they weren't despicable crooks, they weren't exactly huggable either. Director Stephen Frears kept them afar from the camera, which I think contributed to my detachment from the characters.

Even though I found the premise intriguing, the pacing was quite intolerable. It felt like not much happened throughout most of the movie, and then concluded with an abrupt ending that came out of left field. I assume that's how the novel went, but it didn't work at all cinematically.

There were some amusing moments, such as seeing Cusack's ubiquitous buddy, Jeremy Piven as a soldier. Another amusing aspect was seeing how outdated some of the plot points were since the setting took place before the days of cell phones.

So yeah. It didn't suck, but it wasn't great either. It might be worth checking out if you're a big fan of Cusack, Bening and/or Huston.

What I would change
Made Cusack's character more sympathetic.

Premise
The story of one man's quest for the truth behind U.S. President John F. Kennedy's assassination.

Who should watch
Those willing to sit through a three hour long intelligent exploration of one of the darkest chapters in United States history.

Thoughts
Obviously, this film was too long. However, the longer I take to think about it, the more I liked it. There were some boring parts when the characters talked about too much detail and confusion. But the last third, when the heart of the film poured out through Kevin Costner made everything worthwhile.

What I liked best was the cast and the film's construction. Along with Kevin Costner, this film boasted one of the godliest casts ever put to film. Wannabe filmmakers would probably love to break this down to see how it was possible to cram so much intelligence, emotion and controversy into a coherent epic-length film. Kudos to Oliver Stone for making something something so divisive and unclear without fear.

While I do not believe in conspiracies, Oliver Stone presented some harsh questions. Being able to make people think was already a victory. I cannot imagine how emotionally draining it must be for someone who experienced this tragedy to watch this film. In the climax, Costner choked up on his speech about government, war, money, truth and American freedom. So did I. As I write this, it must be heartbreaking for Mr. Stone to watch how eerily similar the Bush administration has treated its power, American's trust, and history.

The brain of the film was probably never entirely correct, but the film's heart was in the right place. And that is what mattered.

What I would change
While I admired how well put together this film was, I would try to cut it to two and a half hours long.

Wesley Snipes stars as a crime lord ascending to power and while a maverick police detective (Ice T) vows to stop him.

Liked
Nostalgic cast, serious urban themes.

Disliked
Incongruous action scenes.

Thoughts
It's a solid movie.

The cast was an interesting group. Wesley Snipes made for a really charming kingpin. A pity he never really took on more riskier bad guy roles (aside from Demolition Man). By now, we're used to Ice T as an actor, but back then I imagine it was a bigger surprise that he could hold his own against Snipes. Judd Nelson also, showed some unexpected edgy chops as the wild card.

Seeing so many 1990's hip-hop/R&B performers throughout the film was amusing, especially Keith Sweat and Flava Flaaaaaaaaav! Chris Rock played a small role. Not surprisingly his acting was so-so. Back then we probably would've raved about his potential as a movie star. Heh.

I appreciated the serious themes the writers and Mario Van Peebles integrated into the story. It definitely didn't sugarcoat the War on Drugs, crack epidemic in urban America, and black-on-black violence. At times, it felt like a play, as characters pontificated lyrically about the plight of the underprivileged.

Unfortunately, the movie had an identity issue, oscillating between gritty realism and Hollywood blockbuster. The gunfights played like summer action flicks, bad physics and all. And at times, the characters behaved in broad, cartoony strokes.

It's cool to see a black-heavy cast movie that wasn't just going through the motions. Director Mario Van Peebles definitely had big ambitions and ideas. While it didn't succeed at all times, New Jack City was an interesting watch, thanks to good acting and strong themes that are still relevant, and aren't expressed enough in cinema.

Jet Li stars as Chinese folk hero Wong Fei-Hong as he takes on evil foreigners.

Thoughts
My memory is a bit hazy, but as a pure martial arts action flick, this my favorite Jet Li film. Unlike Jackie Chan movies, this one was all business. I loved the high-speed camera work, the excellent wire work, and most importantly, Jet Li's amazing kung fu and stunts. At times the Li's acts of violence had a lyrical vibe to it. If you want to see him at his peak, I highly recommend this one.

Keanu Reeves stars as an EFF BEE EYE AGENT! who goes undercover as a surfer to take down bank robbers, led by Patrick Swayze.

Loved
Keanu, unintentional comedy.

Liked
Cinematography.

Thoughts
I you enjoy Keanu acting, you've probably already seen this.

Words are incapable of giving Keanu's performance justice. He magically morphed from rookie cop to sensitive surfer to adrenaline junkie living on the edge. When a character exclaimed to Keanu "you've changed!" I died. It was amusing to see a sane-ish Gary Busey as Keanu's gruff partner, and young Anthony Kiedis as a thug. But really, the casting of the late, great Patrick Swayze was (unintentionally) inspired. Some actors simply can't pull off evil. In this case, he tried too hard with his "bad guy" goatee and crazy eyes, and it still failed.

Even though it was released in 1991, it really had its roots in cheesy 1980's action flicks. I mean, I don't even know where to begin. The ridiculous premise, the illogical plot, the blatant predictability, the horrible portrayal of surfers, the "I don't know how you can say it with a straight face" dialog, all mashed together into a glob of awesome badness.

Oddly, one thing was actually legitimately good, which was the cinematography. There was plenty of outdoors-y eye candy, with poetic shots of surfing in slow-motion, as well as gorgeous aerial shots of sky-diving. Another nice flashy moment was long-take steadicam shots of foot-chases through buildings and houses.

After finally watching this disaster-piece, I'm convinced that director Kathryn Bigelow masterminded a plot to convince the world to let her direct Point Break as practice for her to master the last hour of Zero Dark Thirty two decades later.

A man discovers a jet pack and becomes a crime-fighting superhero.

Who should watch
Jennifer Connelly fans.

Thoughts
This felt like a tame ripoff of Indiana Jones, but with a jet pack. The story was pretty standard. But as a kid, I thought all the jet pack stuff was cool.

The best part of the movie was the beautiful Jennifer Connelly. Her gratuitous cleavage shot was perfect for a 12 year old boy, as I leaned over my seat, trying to see if I could see further down.

With her and the PG action, it was a good action movie for young kids who were afraid of too much violence. Also, the video game was pretty good, too.

What I would change
Better story.

Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter.

Who should watch
Those who want to see great acting and suspense, and have a decent stomach.

Thoughts
It oozed with creepiness and psychological suspense. Obviously, the main reason to watch this film was the performance of Sir Anthony Hopkins. Jodie Foster held her own ground. Based on these, I think it deserved best picture.

Watching it over a decade later, the shock factor felt outdated. Either that or the bad guy's motives seemed to be easy to figure out.

In the sequel to The Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as a good cyborg in charge of protecting young John Conner from a more advanced cyborg.

Loved
Bad ass action sequences.

Liked
Unexpected charm.

Thoughts
This classic belongs in the pantheon of great sequels outdoing their predecessors.

Talk about bang for your buck, there were explosions, stabbings, futuristic laser fights, chases involving motorcycles to eighteen-wheelers, guns a-blazing, and Arnold wielding a handheld gatling gun. My favorites were the car chases because of the genuine, exciting and inventive car stunts.

I was very impressed with the story. I loved how it took the results of the first film seriously and used them as setups for this film, especially Sarah Conner's situation at the beginning. As a fans of the original, I was satiated with the cool tie-ins and interesting twists, such as Arnold as the good guy, and the famous lines repeated in different context.  Both Sarah and Terminator had cool arcs (when you account for the first film).

The most surprising part was the humor, this was helped by Arnold's improved acting and fun writing as John Conner and Terminator bond unexpectedly. Robert Patrick as the T-1000 was an interesting choice, but I think he pulled it off, with his human-but-not-quite-human-and-still-cold-blooded acting. Edward Furlong's acting was pretty lame compared to those two and Linda Hamilton.

From the first shot, you could tell how drastically improved technology has jumped (as well as the budget). However, living in the era of top-notch computer graphics, the pioneering shots of the T-1000 morphing are laughably dated. It was too easy to recognize them as CGI. I find it interesting that the first Terminator had inferior special effects, but they felt more genuine. Perhaps special effects become dated, then hit a dated threshold in which we start to appreciate them again?

This was one of the best films of the 1990's, and arguably Arnold's and James Cameron's best works.  I loved this film for the awesome car chases, and surprising humor and writing.

What I would change
In an early scene, it is unclear if Arnold is good or bad, as he enters a bar and takes everything he needs in his usual badass way. Then inexplicably, George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone" starts playing. Suddenly, the scene became too cheesy and over-the-top.

Personal
While I understand the two films were seven years apart, it's still striking to see how much Arnold had aged. Suddenly, his face is craggy and his body shrunk. This was very noticeable if you watch both back-to-back.

Who should watch
Fans of the cast or Brad Pitt's butt. Those in the mood for some women empowerment.

Thoughts
What surprised me about this wonderful story about two interesting women was it was directed by Ridley Scott, who was known for his macho action flicks. There was car chases and explosions, but that was icing on the cake for the story about these women. I liked the humor and the human touch. This film also had one of the best movie endings.

This film reminded me a bit of 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid', in a good way.
